PS3 - Finally, It's Truly Hacked With its First Custom Firmware

PS3 jailbreaking is all the rage since last year, but it seems hackers has finally see the light as fail0verflow has finally cracked the uncrackable PS3, simply by extracting the system's master key. The master key is used to signed all games and software running in the console to confirm it's all legit and therefore, once the key is known, any kinds of software and games can be signed, which calls for another concern where it enables piracy.

As soon as the PS3 is cracked, KaKaRoTo has managed to create a CFW (Custom Firmware) though due to copyright issues, he didn't release the firmware. No worries though, some tools are available to convert your official firmware to custom firmware. He also mentioned that

"The advantage here is that you can do it for any firmware, if you want to keep version 3.41, then give it the 3.41 update, if you are on 3.55 already and can’t downgrade, then run the script on the official 3.55 firmware and it will create a modified 3.55 firmware. 

You can put the file in a USB drive under the filename “PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP” and then go to system update in the XMB, and it will allow you to install the update (even if you’re already on 3.55)."

For now, the CFW can't do much. The only change is that you will be able to add 'install package files' to the game section of the Cross Media Bar. But I'm pretty sure more things will be added on in later stages.

Jailbroken PS3 - With Dreamcast and SNES!

Okay, so the Jailbreak code for the PS3 that was released to the public quite recently. I doubt Sony is happy about that, and more so when the PS3 can be seen ported and running snes9x and NullDC emulator on it. Who want to see their greatest work running emulators from its competitors? The ports is not perfected yet, but expect the hacking committee to make it 100% workable soon!

PS3 New Firmware - USB Homebrew Now Impossible

Sony had just released firmware 3.42 for the PS3 as a minor update which includes additional security features. Once this update is installed, all instances of using the USB exploits has become impossible. SONY is pretty fast in its outtake of patching this exploit.

This update is also compulsory - meaning if they want to access the PlayStation Network, they'll need it which also includes playing of future games. So jailbreakers, plans for your next move?

Open-Source PSJailbreak

Sony has another new problem for the PS3 called PSGroove, an open-source PSJailbreak. With the PSJailbreak now under fire of a lawsuit, this new open-source jailbreak will have Sony face-palming itself, thinking of what to do next. In order to use the hack, the code must be downloaded and installed on an AT90USBkey or Teensy++ USB development board, after which homebrew folks will be able to execute unsigned third-party apps and games on the PS3. Currently the ability to boot ISO files is temporarily disabled, but a workaround should be available pretty soon. So Sony, what's your next move?

PS3 USB Modchip Halted - Hackers Sued

Okay, here's some bad news. Sony found out about these modchips (it's all over the internet, they are are bound to find out!) and is suing Ozmodchips Pty Ltd. Australian retailer, Quantronic, has been ordered by the Federal Court of Australia to stop the sale and distribution of these modchips. The manufacturer even canceled and refunded all preorders of the USB device. Either way, if Sony were to win or lose this case, they'll definitely do something about this hack with a firmware update.

PS3 MMO XL-Controller by Hori

There aren't many MMORPGs on consoles. Heck, the only ones I know are FFXI and Phantasy Star Online! Still, it wouldn't kill to have a keyboard for the PS3 to play MMOs like on the PC. The PS3 MMO controller by Hori might do the trick. It looks old, really, like some keyboard from a 15 years back with the right side of the Dual Shock 3 attached on the right and a separate controller on for the left side of the DS3. It's not available for sale yet as it's still a model but I think it's something to look forward to with the upcoming release of FFXIV no?

FFXIII bricks PS3 - Sony and Square Enix Faces Lawsuit

A class action lawsuit, seeking more than $5 million in damages, has been filed against Sony and Square Enix for selling copies of Final Fantasy XIII, claiming that they knowingly sold it despite bricking PlayStation 3 consoles.

Man sued Sony for PS3 firmware v3.21

A Californian man, Anthony Ventura, had sued Sony for its PS3 Firmware V3.21 which disables the ability to install Linux. "Older models that were equipped with the ability to install other OS is now obsolete" was the complaint and it was filed as an "intentional disable of useful features that were advertised originally".

Sony announced that it's removing security problems of function also pointed out that it is based on self-interest to anti-piracy. It involved users and millions of unrelated people and the plaintiff are demanding more compensation of more than $5,000,000.
